Handmade 50s Sock Hop Pinatas

Homemade piñatas will bring life to any 50’s sock hop party. So, when you are thinking of a piñata that will represent the 50’s sock hop era what comes to mind? Of course the singer of the era, Elvis would have to be the perfect answer. Here are the steps to creating an Elvis piñata for any 50’s Sock Hop party.

To begin making this great homemade Elvis piñata gather the following supplies; a balloon, tape, flour, water, newspaper, scissors, paint, string, construction paper, crepe paper, spray adhesive, and of course candy and small toys to fill the piñata.

Once you have assembled the supplies you are ready to assemble your homemade Elvis piñata. Begin the assembly by inflating the balloon to create the core shape of your piñata. Be sure only inflate the balloon until it resembles the shape of a face. Next to add a nose by cutting the construction paper into the shape of a triangle. Tape this onto the balloon where the nose would appear on the face.

The next step in creating the handmade Elvis piñata would be to make the glue that will become the paper Mache. To do this to mix ½ cup flour with 2/3 cup water in a pan. Heat this mixture on the stove for approximately 5 minutes or until the mix thickens.

Once this is done tear the newspaper into strips to be attached to your handmade piñata. The strips should be approximately 1 ½ inches wide. Take the glue and smear the strips of the newspaper and apply them to the balloon being sure that all surfaces of the balloon covered. However, be sure to leave a small opening at the top of the balloon to fill it and remove the balloon. Continue to cover the balloon until the paper Mache is fairly thick. Then allow to dry overnight.

The final step to creating the homemade Elvis piñata would be to paint and decorate it. A great way to do this is to have a picture of Elvis to refer to especially when it comes to the lips and eyes. Use black crepe paper for the hair and side burns. Use the spray adhesive to keep the hair in place. Once finished, pop the balloon and remove. Then simply fill with a variety of toys and candies.
