The 80s were a time of big hair and even bigger hairspray cans. Everything was big then, from shoes to shoulder pads and the decade spawned a lot of unique styles that we often look back in photos of ourselves and wonder, ‘What made me do that?’ Don’t deny it we all have done something weird in the name of fashion and style during the 80s.
New Alternative bands became very popular and inspired many with their own unique sense of style. For awhile many people were wandering around with hair styled by A flock of seagulls, and all the girls wore cloths in the eclectic manner of a young Madonna in her music videos. In fact the music video really came into its own during the 80s. This was the decade during which MTV was born and as they say, ‘Video killed the radio star’ soon after the channel came into being the music industry wasn’t just about the music anymore. Stars had to look good, and dress to kill. It didn’t hurt any if the stars had a ‘different’ sense of style from the rest of the world.
The styles were pretty out there. Who can forget the classic sweater dress? Those were gifts our grandmothers could knit for us and we’d actually wear them, but of course after a few times in the washer they always shrunk and started getting fuzzy and worn. Blue eye shadow and hot pink lipstick was around before the decade but it wasn’t until the 80s that we decided to combine them into one dramatic make up repertoire.
Now most of these cool fads grew old with the end of the 80s but they made many great memories. Party themes with the 80s in mind are great for fun events and people still love to dress up like they are from the 80s.
