The history of the show the Greatest American Hero is not incredibly long. It was a science fiction television series that previously aired for three short seasons that spanned from 1981 to 1983. The pilot first premiered as a two hour movie on March 18th of 1981. Stars included William Katt who played as Ralph Hinkley, which actually turned into Hanley in the latter part of the first season of its run. Robert Culp played an FBI agent known as Bill Maxwell and Connie Sellecca played the part of a lawyer named Pam Davidson.
The history behind the shows premises was that Ralph had previously acquired an 'alien' suit from some otherworldly visitors which gave him superhuman powers. The show chronicled the adventures of an unbidden superhero by portraying Ralph as a special education teacher who is determined to be the one who gets through to them. While taking a bus trip with his students the bus breaks down and he is forced to walk for help. While walking agent Bill Maxwell steams along and nearly runs Ralph down. He claims he had no control of his car and then bright lights appear in the sky above. As the two men jump for cover in the security of the agents car, the doors lock themselves and the two find themselves imprisoned within the car.
In the shows history of three seasons there were few big name stars who joined in their ranks.
