Known for their adorable—but fierce—mascot, the Arizona Cardinals is among the oldest, most respectable sports teams in the nation. Founded in 1898 and a charter member of the National Football League, this team holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously run professional football franchise in the United States.
Originally known as the Morgan Athletic Club (a small neighborhood football team based in Chicago), the team was previously based in St. Louis, Chicago and Racine, among other places. The Cardinals got their permanent name (as reflected in their bright red jerseys, which onetime owner and painting contractor Chris O’Brien identified as “cardinal red”, thus earning the team its permanent name) in 1901 but didn’t relocate to Arizona until the spring of 1988, settling at Sun Devil Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University. The team moved to its current home, the University of Phoenix stadium, in 2006.
A total of 14 former Arizona Cardinals are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including nationally recognized names such as Jim Thorpe and Larry Wilson, who currently serves the Cardinals as a vice president. And aside from the team’s illustrious history and winning game record (indeed, the team scored as NFC Champions in 2008), the Arizona Cardinals also are known for its fun team spirit. The team hosts Red Zone Tailgate parties and boasts a beautiful, spirited squad of Arizona Cardinals cheerleaders.
