The history of the Barney show has been a long one. Created in 1987 by a woman named Sheryl Leach the program began as a series of home created videos. These videos created by the team Sheryl put together came out with videos that were educational and appealing to children. The original title of the show was Barney and the Backyard game. This series also featured the star known as Sandy Duncan in the first original three videos. It was later on in the series that Barney was joined by BJ, Riff and Baby Bop.
Hailing from Texas Sheryl Leach found that the original videos were not very popular outside the reach of her own state. However, once the Public Broadcasting Service agreed to pick up the show a timely revamp was already prepared and the show topped the charts in daytime television for children who were commonly home those hours, due to not being of school age as of yet.
The PBS series was produced by Lyrick Studios and for many years into this stage of its history the show was taped within ColorDynamics in Allen Texas. However, shortly after it left Allen it moved to the Studios in Dallas. This show since 2006 has been produced by WNET. Sheryl Leach did leave her show in 2002 after the entertainment studio that had been serving the show for so long bought out Lyrick Studios. Barney still is a very popular childrens show that has had positive effects on pre school age children.
