A homemade baseball piñata is the cherry on top of the baseball theme party. Include baseball party supplies, decorations, party favors, games, and activities for a great baseball theme party. Making a handmade baseball piñata is very easy to do and requires little know-how in the piñata making field. A simple paper mache paste includes using:
2 cups cold water
2 cups boiling water (in a saucepan)
3 tablespoons sugar
½ cup flour
In a bowl, combine the flour and cold water. Stir the mixture into the saucepan of boiling water. Bring it to a boil again, stirring continuously. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the sugar. Let the paste cool completely before using (it will thicken as it cools).
To make the baseball piñata start by blowing up the punch balloon, knot the tail securely, and trim it to about 1 inch. Tape flat the nub on the end opposite the knot. Prepare the paste and the paper strips. Prepare three layers of paper mache (2 of newspaper and 1 of white copy paper), of fifty 2- by 11-inch strips for each layer. Dip each strip into the paste and wipe off the excess with fingers, then smooth the strip around the balloon. Apply the first layer horizontally, overlapping the strips slightly to ensure complete coverage, and mache closely around the knot at the top. Let the first layer dry over night. The next day begin attaching the hanging loop. Cut the string in half and save one 5-foot piece for hanging the finished piñata. Tape the middle of the other piece to the end of the balloon opposite the knot. Bring each half of the string up opposite sides of the balloon and tape the string in place once on each side and then at the top, 1 1/2 inches on each side of the balloon's knot. Knot the string ends together 6 inches above the balloon and trim if necessary. Apply the second layer of newspaper strips vertically. Mache over the taped-down string, but leave the loop free. Let this layer dry. For the third layer, apply white copy paper strips horizontally. Mache closely around where the loop strings emerge. Let this layer dry over night. Using a craft knife, cut a candy door (about 3 inches square) between the strings. Carefully cut 3 sides of the square, leaving 1 side uncut for a hinge. Reach in and remove the balloon. Fill the piñata. Use red plastic tape of tissue paper to make the red stitches for the baseball.
