A Bat Mitzvah has been just as crucial throughout history as the Bar Mitzvah although the general population does not hear as much about it. This celebration occurs when a girl reaches 12 years old. According to Jewish custom this is when a girl becomes a woman. Just like the boys the Bat Mitzvah is held during the Shabbat service. The first Aliyah is when a girl is allowed to perform the Jewish traditional rituals.
Following this remarkable event, history tells us the Seudat Mitzvah or celebration occurs. This a large and joyous event for the family. There is food, drink, music and dancing throughout the party. Many times it is held in resort centers that can offer a large enough space to accommodate large numbers of family and friends. Others may hold the party at the synagogue. There are numerous rituals throughout the event. The blessing of the meal, candle lighting ceremony, and hora dance.
