Today the Birthday Party is a common fixture in virtually every home, family, and circle of friends. This marks a significant change from days past, when a festivity to acknowledge the day of one’s birth was a royal affair.
In the olden days of Europe only kings and queens were deemed worthy of birthday celebrations. The first birthday parties for the common folk were found in Germany, perhaps inspiring the western tradition of ‘b-day’ bashes for all.
Here in the United States, the tradition of the Birthday Party has evolved greatly over time, while still maintaining certain classic elements. People still serve and enjoy elaborately decorated cakes at these festivities, and serenade the guest of honor with a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday;” likely in a bright setting bedecked with balloons, banners, and other celebratory symbols.
As the saying goes, though, the more things change the more they stay the same. While most birthday parties contain certain essential elements, the ways in which people celebrate birthdays have changed significantly over the years. While a traditional Birthday Party involved activities like outdoor sports and leisurely conversation sessions, more modern fests could entail anything from DVD and video game marathons to heated paint ball and laser tag tournaments.
Regardless of the activities celebrated at a Birthday Party, the mission of this festivity remains the same throughout the years: to show love and respect for a friend or family member on the very special day of their birth. Plan a Birthday Party today!
