Handmade Birthday Pinatas

Celebrate a child’s birthday with one of the oldest celebration traditions – a homemade birthday piñata. Piñatas are very fun to make and cost little to do so.

When selecting a homemade piñata to make for a birthday party, consider the theme of the party. For example, a princess theme party may include a frog (Princess and the Frog), castle, unicorn piñata. Little cowboys who want a cowboy theme party then consider making a horse piñata or large sheriffs badge. The possibilities are endless for homemade piñatas but piñatas require some ingenuity and craft making abilities.

A homemade frog piñata can be made by blowing up a large round balloon. Before the paper mache is applied, use newspaper rolled into balls to form the shape of the frog. Once the desired shape is achieved, tape the newspaper balls on to the balloon. Use toilet paper rolls to form the legs of the frog. Once the newspaper balls and toilet rolls are securely applied, begin apply the paper mache. Apply at least two layers, letting dry overnight, then insert the candy. Cover the hole with more paper mache. Let the frog piñata dry over night then apply the green tissue paper. Paint on or use googly eyes for facial features. For the frog’s feet, use green craft Styrofoam cut from a frog feet pattern and glue on the toilet rolls. Glue the tissue paper on with glue sticks allow to dry over night once more and this frog piñata is ready for the children.
