Homemade
Book Costume
Having a book theme costume party can be quite a bit of fun. For sure, there are more than a few classic and famous books around which a really fun party, and a costume, can be designed. For example, two of the most famous books of the 20th century, Gone With the Wind and Lord of the Rings, are excellent costume (especially homemade costume) book theme party fodder. There's Vivian Leigh's famous “Barbeque dress“ from GWTW or Gandalf's gray pointed hat, staff and cloak from the “Rings” trilogy, and that's just for starters.
Usually, a book costume party – and a homemade costume for that party – tends to be more reflective of the movie that was made of the book, but that's not a bad thing. This is because watching the movie adaptation can give one an excellent idea of not only what the costume should look like but also the style or hair that should be worn.
In general, a book theme costume party generally involves something more historical in nature, such as Alexandre Dumas' “Count of Monte Christo” or Jane Austen's “Sense and Sensibility” or “Pride and Prejudice.” All three books feature period clothing that can be made from widely available Restoration Era patterns, for one. And movies of all three books exist so that a person can get a good idea of the headwear and clothing styles (not to mention the ways in which hair was worn) of the day. A homemade costume for such a party might actually be a fun and memorable costume to create.
