Handmade Book Pinatas

Homemade piñatas can be made to look like anything from lavish comic book characters, flowers, animals, food, and anything else one chooses to make. Create the child’s favorite book character such as Cat in the Hat, Where The Wild Things Are, Harry Potter, Cloud With A Chance of Meatballs, Alice In Wonderland etc. select a character from one of these or other popular child’s books and begin the process. The more complicated the piñata the sooner one will have to begin. Forming the shape of the piñata and allowing the paper mache to dry is the most time consuming. Wrap the balloons in newspaper before putting down paper mache on. Place the paper mache in front of a fan to help with the drying process. Once the paper mache has dried, now the time for details can begin. Before details are applied, ensure the piñata is structurally sound and resemble what is trying to be created. Use crepe paper, paint, and metallic paper to create a piñata that shines and shimmers. If the piñata is too tough to break once the layers of paper mache are applied, poke holes in the paper mache so it can give more easily when struck. If the piñata is set to have multiple colors on it ensure to mark them beforehand with a marker or pencil. Write down which colors go where to eliminate mistakes. Let the completed piñata set overnight and it will then be ready for the party.
