The Care Bears was a set of characters that were created by the largest American card company in history, known as American Greetings. Created in 1981 their original purpose was for usage on the cards the company produced. The original artist who created the characters who were to be placed on the greeting cards was Elena Kucharik.
A Care Bear fact is that each bear has its own different color as well as its personal symbol on its belly that is supposed to represent its character and personality. These were eventually dubbed the belly badges. In the year 2002 they were once again introduced but this time with new toys. These bears that were then made by Play a Long Toy company had such additions as light up belly's, glow in the dark bears and many other features uniquely corresponding with their belly symbols.
It is a well known fact that Care Bears are still on the market in 2010, however in recent years several companies including a French and Canadian one have tried to buy the Care Bears copyright from Play Along Toys to no avail. It seems Play Along is happy with the Care Bear line and its healthy production so many years after its original inception as an intended character for an American Greeting card. With many productive years left ahead of the Care Bear line it is unlikely this company will go on the market for quite a few more years.
