Cinco de Mayo is celebrated mainly in Mexico, so a few Spanish conversational sentences will be in order. Cinco de Mayo means the Fifth of May, and that’s when this historical revolutionary date is celebrated. There is no need to be fluent in Spanish just for this occasion, but simple greetings like, “mucho gusto,” when you are introduced to someone might be nice. It loosely translates into “nice to meet you.” “Hola” means “hello,” so that’s another one that will come in handy.
Of course, if you are not fluent in Spanish, it may not be wise to ask a question in Spanish. It will be answered in Spanish, and, not only will you probably not understand the words, but it will be answered quickly, and there may be more to it than that. So, if you’re going to ask a question, practice a variety of answers with someone you know who speaks fluent Spanish, so that you will be ready.
Cinco de Mayo often involves a piñata for the children. These colorful piñatas are filled with candy, toys, and other novelty items. You might comment on the beautiful colors the piñata is made of, or even the clever depiction of an animal or whatever piñata was chosen for the occasion. The music you hear at this Cinco de Mayo party will be festive, and perhaps a Mariachi band will be playing. If you don’t know the words to sing along, there is always the opportunity to join in the fun by clapping your hands and stomping your feet to be a part of it all.
