Columbus Day Costume
This Columbus Day take the time to throw a fun costume party with your friends. It's also a great idea for those teachers who would like to inject some excitement into the task of learning about early American history. While, a lot has changed in the way we teach early history, especially the fact that Columbus was not the first person to 'discover' the North American continent it can't be denied that his voyage helped alert the rest of the European world to it's existence.
A Columbus Day celebration can include the kids getting dressed up like sailors or Portuguese crew members that may have joined Columbus' on his journey to the Americas. You can even get them to help put together miniature versions of the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria out of cardboard and paper.
Guests at your party can get in on the fun by getting dressed up as well. While the kids can dress as a Colonial boysand girls, the adults can dress as ladies, knights and peasant. There are plenty of different costumes one can put together for this historical party. If you'd like to make up your own costumes look for dark wool and even cotton fiber short pants, simple cloth hats, blousy white shirts and vests. Buckled shoes help to complete the look.
Give out party prizes for the best or most complete costumes and let the guests do the voting to find out whose costumes are better. Prizes can be party favors and goodie bags.
