A homemade Columbus Day piñata might include images of the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria ships that were used to discover America. It’s easy to create your own piñata, and you will just need a few things.
Start with a round balloon, and blow it up firm. Next, you will need to make paper mache out of flour and water. Mix the two together until it is pasty. Newspaper shreds will then be dipped into the paste and covered. Apply them to the balloon, leaving a hole at the top, to cover the balloon almost completely in paper newspaper. The hole at the top will eventually be used to add the candies. Then let this dry. After it’s dry, pop the balloon inside, and carefully remove it.
Your creativity is key here when decorating your handmade Columbus Day piñata. Paint three ships onto the balloon, all different sizes, as the three ships that discovered America were large, smaller, and smallest. Make them look like old-fashioned ships. You can add blue and white crepe paper, if you like, either dangling in shreds or glued to it flat, to look like the ocean around the ships. All that is left to do after that is fill it with candy and other goodies, add a strong string to it that will carry the weight, and hang it. The kids will play frantically in anticipation of breaking the piñata open to get to the candy. And you will be able to be proud at the entertaining decoration that you were able to create.
