Handmade Disco Pinatas

A Disco theme children’s party calls for a homemade disco piñata. Keep children entertained by using one of the oldest celebration traditions with a handmade disco piñata. A disco piñata is nothing more than a ball made of paper mache with metallic paper on it. Piñatas are fun to make and even more fun to smash.

To make the disco ball piñata use a punch balloon. Tape flat the nub on the end opposite the knot. Prepare the paste and the paper strips. Prepare three layers of paper mache (2 of newspaper and 1 of white copy paper), of fifty 2- by 11-inch strips for each layer. Dip each strip into the paste and smooth the strip around the balloon. Apply the first layer horizontally and second layer vertically and so on and continue until 3 layers are formed. After the second layer use tape and a wire hanger for the hook of the piñata or punch two holes in the top of the ball and use a string to hang. Using a craft knife, cut a door (about 3 inches square), and fill the ball with candy and treats and closed shut. Once the candy is secure then apply the Prismatic silver wrapping paper to create the disco ball. Apply the paper as necessary and once completed, hang the disco ball and let the children have there fun. Instead of placing individual candy in the Disco ball, use small party favor bags filled with various candies and every child will get equal shares.
