Earth Day was conceived in 1969, although it was not actually recognized and celebrated until 1970 in San Francisco. The first Earth Day was held on March 21, 1970. It was to bring about awareness of our planet, nature, and how to keep it clean and pollution free.
There is much written on the subject of Earth Day, and since 1970, companies have capitalized on it to save the whales, as well as other species, and to generally clean up the mess we as people have created on this earth. There is much going on in the way of recycling now. Newspaper, plastic bottles and jugs, tin cans, and so forth, now have a place to be recycled and re-used. These days many companies are going green, and making us believe that they are using recycled materials for their buildings and their manufacturing. It makes them look like they are doing something to save the earth, and that they are more responsible.
Of course, one can also argue that it is too late. There is much talk about global warming, and what we have already done to this world cannot be reversed for generations to come. There is controversy about recycling and going green, and whether or not it will actually make a difference at all. One’s opinion of recycling will be very different from the next person’s perception of it, if you ask around. Older people may have a completely different outlook on the subject of going green than younger people do. But it will all make for a very interesting conversation on Earth Day.
