Elmo has a long history with a crowd that is notoriously known for their short term memories and attention spans. He is self described as being a perpetual three and a half years old and often refers to himself in third person. A Sesame staff writer described Elmo's origins as 'the red puppet that was lying around', she said often others would try to pick up the puppet and create a personality for him but nothing really stuck. However, she noted that one day a talented puppeteer named Kevin Clash picked up the puppet and brought a new life to him.
Elmos history only grew from there as he attended day time guest slots such as those on the Rosie O'Donnell show as well as appearances on the Tony Danza show, Rove Live and many other well hosted programming. Elmo has also been seen on Teen Kids News where him and an expert on childhood development gave out some very helpful tips on babysitting. Additionally. even Emeril Live gave him a chance to help Emeril create some egg nog during a holiday special show.
Oprah added to Elmo's rich history by hosting a show called the Faces Behind Famous names which debuted Kevin Clash as Elmo himself, while allowing 'another' Elmo to share the stage with him. Elmo was also the sole star of the motion picture Elmo in Grouchland as well as the movie Elmo saves Christmas. He has even made a special guest appearance on the show The West Wing along with Big Bird himself.
