Groundhog Day Party Games

Groundhog Day ranks as one of the most fun and anticipated holidays on the calendar; one that should by all rights be celebrated with some primo homemade cookies.

Those who are planning to bake theme-related homemade cookies for a Groundhog Day party should know the legend of he who is perhaps the most famous groundhog in history, Punxsutawney Phil. Each Groundhog Day Phil is taken from his borough and asked to deliver a prediction about the coming seasons. If Phil sees his shadow, then this brings a harbinger of six more weeks of winter; if no groundhog-generated shadow is apparent, then spring is just around the corner.

So when preparing homemade cookies for a Groundhog Day party, the host could bake a basic batch of dark chocolate cookies (either plain or iced) in the shape of a groundhog, referring to them as Shadow Cookies in the presence of guests. Or she could bake these groundhog cookies in the likeness of an actual groundhog, smothering them in light chocolate icing and adding dark chocolate kisses to represent Phil’s eyes and nose.

As another alternative for homemade cookies at a Groundhog Day party, the host could simply bake a batch of round, thick dark chocolate cookies (or perhaps Babe Ruth Bars, as they dark, thick, rich and gooey) that liken Phil’s borough.

Aside from some delicious Groundhog Day homemade cookies, kids may wish to celebrate the holiday by churning out some theme-related coloring pages. As Groundhog Day is a kid friendly holiday, children will love decorating Coloring Pages that show adorable images of Punxsutawney Phil.
