Far more than just a celebratory feast, Holy Communion is a sacred ritual that celebrates the perfect life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It is also an opportunity to join with friends and family for a special, very jovial meal.
Although deeply and historically rooted in the Catholic Church, people of various faiths now sit down to celebrate Holy Communion; and often many times during the course of their lives, as this is not a one-time ritual.
Guests at Holy Communion sit down for a serving of bread (to represent the body of Christ) and wine (to symbolize Christ’s blood). The presiding priest symbolically transforms the feast in an act of consecration that takes place during a preceding Mass.
As participants eat they reflect upon the great life, many accomplishments, and noble death of their Savior. And they can reflect in depth on Biblical scriptures associated with this rite, including Matthew 26:26-28 and 1 Corinthians 10:16-17.
Although the nature and ritual of Holy Communion has remained constant over time, some elements have changed. Once homemade, Communion bread and wine now can be purchased at religious stores or even online. And the ritual has been specially adapted for the younger set; children often drink grape juice, and not wine, at First and Holy Communions.
