Celebrate the legendary team known as the Houston Texans with a party as big as Texas itself; one that comes complete with some amazing trivia facts about one of the National Football League’s newest and brightest teams.
In 2000, the NFL's 32nd franchise was christened the Houston Texans before a crowd of thousands at a downtown rally on Texas Avenue. The team took to the field at the newly constructed Reliant Stadium under the leadership of team owner Bob McNair (who at one point donated $10,000 to the American Red Cross in an effort to aid Houston flood victims) and Dom Capers, the club's first head coach. The Texans’ first 10 players were running back Michael Basnight, safety Leomont Evans, tackle Robert Hicks, defensive tackle Jason Nikolao, quarterback Mike Quinn, fullback Matt Snider, cornerback Jason Suttle, linebacker Casey Tisdale, safety Kevin Williams and tackle Jerry Wisne.
The team and its players have earned a number of distinctions throughout the course of its short history. Running Back Domanick Williams (Davis) was named NFL Rookie of the Year in 2004. The same year, the team celebrated its first-ever shutout win, defeating the Jaguars 21-0 at ALLTEL Stadium for its seventh win of the season. And in 2005, Rookie KR Jerome Mathis was selected to the Pro Bowl, joining Chargers LB Shawne Merriman as one of only two rookies to make that year’s squad.
The Houston Texans also is known for the team’s signature colors, red, white and blue. And its mascot, appropriately enough, is a mighty Texas bull.
