The history of the Incredible Hulk began in 1962 when a comic was produced that portrayed a lonely scientist named Dr. Bruce Banner who was helping the government to create a new and advanced bomb called the gamma bomb. After an accidental explosion involving the gamma bomb Dr Banner began to suffer from seeming metamorphosis triggered by anger or rage. The creators of the incredible hulk dubbed him a perfect cross between Jekyll and Hyde as well as Frankenstein.
The Incredible Hulks history has also been compared to the Golem of many old Jewish myths. Originally the shade of skin chosen for the Incredible Hulk was grey. This color was chosen specifically because it did not immediately represent any particular ethnic group. However, the colorist at that time, Stan Goldberg, share with the creators that there were serious issues with lighting and other aspects that made grey a bad shade for the alter ego of Bruce Banner in the Incredible Hulk.
However the fact is that the grey wasn't meant to last. Creators finally decided upon the shade of green we all eventually came to know as hulk green. Although in his extremely early days he wasn't the most popular angry guy with super human strength he did make his way up the ranks and into the Fantastic Four in record time. When the creators found that they had a massive huge audience in the college age crowd they began to cater more directly to them which helped to create the media explosion that drove this comic to the big screen.
