Kung Fu Panda Costume

A handmade Kung Fu Panda costume may be something of a challenge for someone who does not really sew. But there are some things that can easily be substituted for the actual panda outfit. Also, a Barney Rubble costume might be fun.

For the panda costume, a plain, black turtleneck will suffice for the top of the outfit. At the belly, though, a white sweatshirt will need to be sewn onto the turtleneck. Also, a pair of black gloves will tie it all in to complete the panda bear look. To make it easier for the child to handle things, the fingertips of the gloves can be cut off.

A low-rise pair of brown shorts with darker brown stitching or stripe at the top will come next. Be sure they are large enough to fit over a pair of black tights or leggings.

This homemade Kung Fu Pandacostume also needs some gauze around the ankles that is also wrapped around the bottom of a pair of brown slippers on the feet.

Be sure to stuff the turtleneck and belly with foam or pillows to give it a chubby look, as pandas generally have rounded bellies. The stuffing can also be extended to the arms and legs for effect.

The head will be a bit of a challenge, but a plain, round, white pillow can be made into a mask that fits on the child’s head. Be sure that there is enough cut out of it so that the child can breathe, talk, and see. The black around the eyes can be sewn onto the pillow, as well as the nose, and two pieces of stiffer black material can act as the ears. Or try a Wolfman costume.
