Throughout the history of the Mexican culture, La Quinceanera celebrations have marked the transition of young girls from children to adults. The celebration is held on are near the 15th birthday. It marks the young woman as having reached maturity and eligibility for marriage. The celebration is immense and is steeped in traditions.
The Misa de accion de gracias or thanksgiving mass is one of the most crucial parts of the celebration according to Mexican history. This occurs in church and is elaborate and powerful as a wedding ceremony. The young girl is elaborately dressed in a formal gown and head wear. She is positioned at the foot of the church altar through the service. She is customarily accompanied by parent, grandparents and maids of honor.
Many girls celebrated throughout history with a trip to the continent. Elaborate trips to France, England, or even more exotic countries were once the order of the day. Now they usually opt for a massive party. Most families choose to rent a banquet hall due to the number of guests expected to attend. Friends and family will sometime sponsor parts of the event. This means they pay for the part they sponsor. This practice helps the family handle the financial aspects of the celebration.
The history of the celebration is unclear. Some date it back to Aztec times, when a young maiden was acknowledged as having passed into womanhood. Today decorations and confections are lavish. The young woman will remember her La Quinceanera the remainder of her life.
