Martin Luther King Jr Costume
Martin Luther King Jr Day is held each year on the 3rd Monday in January in honor of the man who did so much to further race relations in the United States. It's a national holiday that many like to celebrate, especially teachers looking to liven up the experience of learning in school. If you are a teacher and you want to make history a bit more fun, you can certainly throw an MLK day costume party for the kids.
Have the little ones get dressed up in clothing from the 50s and 60s when they come in on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a Retro flashback party. The kids can wear bellbottoms and Afros or flannel and tweed. Have them stage sit ins in the school cafeteria or put together an integrated band with a few 60s Musician rocking out to the tunes. They can put on a show for the school and everyone can take part in the holiday festivities.
Perhaps encourage a few kids to put together a short class skit talking about some famous civil rights leaders of the 50s and 60s. They can come in costume as those leaders and present their story to the other kids in the classroom. The entire school can also gather for a school wide presentation to watch the skits your class puts on. At the end of the festivities everyone can sit down and enjoy plenty of party treats, trade party favors and vote on who's costumes were the best.
