A medieval festival or party is a terrific way to introduce middle school kids to the history of the world, a much better way than setting them down in front of the black boards, and history books. With all of the different fun facts that are out there, this can be an interactive learning lesson for the 5th and 6th graders in your classroom, or if you are involved in other school or church festivities. What one can do is get with the other teachers if you are the history teacher; ask each subject to teach something in regards to medieval math, proper etiquette and English for that time and about maps and world history. Once the lessons have been outlined take different people from that era and write their names down starting with royalty, one king, queen a prince and a princess and work your way down to peasants, butchers, their wives etc so that way every student will have a role in this part of the lesson.
At the end of the lesson allow the kids to have a medieval festival asking them to dress in character, have a meal presented to the king and queen and other royal family members; this is where the meat carver and spouse can come in to play, offering the food to the royal family, You may also go through and offer different medieval facts, and sporting events to entertain the royal family as well. Each grade and be based on their roles and classroom participation and costumes for character and role playing.
