Mis Quince is a termed used through history to indicate a young girl who is celebrating her La Quinceanera. The La Quinceanera is when young Mexican girls reach the age of maturity. It is celebrated on the girl’s 15th birthday. The Mexican culture considers this a momentous occasion and spares no expense in the celebration.
The celebration is also part of Catholic history. The young girl attends a Misa de accion de gracias prior to the party. History dictates many of the facts of the ceremony. The girl wears formal attire and is seated at the altar foot throughout the ceremony. She is joined by family and maids of honor. At the conclusion of the mass the maids of honor pass out favors.
To help cover the cost of such as large celebration, family and friends have historically sponsored portions of the event. For example, a grandparent might sponsor the gown, while another could sponsor the banquet hall. Those who are not as wealthy will often hold the celebrations at the church or someone’s home. They are just as festive but on a smaller scale.
Referring to the girl as Mis Quince started sometime back in history but no one is exactly sure how or when. The same is true of the celebration itself. It is said to be a combination of ancient Aztec tradition mixed with Catholic traditions. La Quinceanera is specific to the Mexican culture and is not celebrated in other Catholic cultures. This is a party event that the young girl will remember forever. Parents often begin planning a girls La Quinceanera from the day she is born.
