A festive
party can be had with an
educational twist.
New Years Eve is celebrated on December 31 each year with various types of parties and festivities. Many people use it to send a year off on a good note, and start fresh on the same good note. While not generally regarded as a kid friendly holiday, you can certainly make it that way by turning your festivities into a learning party experience. Talk with your children about their favorite parts of the year, and what they are looking forward to the most next year. Have them help you make party favors with various craft ideas, like hats, signs, jewelry, etc. Get their help in the kitchen by letting them help with party snacks. Make a list of resolutions for the upcoming year, and keep an eye on the clock making a game out of counting down to the New Year. For young children who do not know much about the calendar now is a great time to introduce them to the concept of the months, the days, and how long a year really is. Have a contest to see who can stay up until midnight, and let the children drink sparkling grape juice for the toast. Jokingly say, “I’ll see you next year” if they go to bed before clock strikes midnight. Make a time capsule to open next New Years Eve and store it in the attic instead of hiding it in the yard, with something from each member of the family. Though things may not change much in a year, it will be a nice tradition!
