“Let’s bring it home in 2011” is the slogan of this year’s New York Jets team; and the host of a New York Jets football party will bring lots of guests to her home with a fine selection of handmade games.
Guests can pay tribute to the New York Jets and their home state by playing “Let’s HEAR It for New York,” a homemade game with a musical bent. To play this game, guests could stand in a circle and toss around a paper, paper mache or bean bag airplane; a remote control plane that actually flies from person to person would be even better. As each individual catches the plane, he/she could sing a verse from his/her favorite musical tribute to New York. These songs could include “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra, “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel, “Boy from New York City” by the Manhattan Transfer, or (for the younger set) “Empire State of Mind” from Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. Honors could be given for Best Song Choice, Most Original Song Choice, Best Rendition and Best Presentation; a special booby prize even could given for the Worst Rendition (You’ll Never Be Welcome in New York Again). Prizes could include Jets T-shirts, pennants, bumper stickers, and bobble heads depicting some of the team’s most famous players. These could include Joe Namath, Brett Favre, Boomer Esiason, Keyshawn Johnson, Vinnie Testaverde, and Mark Gastineau.
Another handmade game that may prove even more popular with New York Jets fans (especially those who can’t sing?) is “News York Jets”; a game which challenges each player to come up with a different trivia fact about the team—then report it to the crowd in the formal, official fashion of a news anchor, using a homemade paper mache or paper microphone as a ‘prop.’ Trivia facts could include “When did the New York Jets win their first Super Bowl?” (Answer: 1969), “In what year did the Jets score the most victories?” (1998, the year that they scored a total of 12 victories against 15 opponents), “What are the team’s signature colors? (Answer: white and green), and “What is the name of the New York Jets’ cheerleading squad” (Answer: the Jets Flight Crew).
