Who says that one can’t have fun at work? The Office Party is a fun festivity where people work hard at having a good time.
In its rawest form, the original version of the Office Party probably was celebrated on farms during the 18th and 19th centuries, when day laborers and other farm workers were invited to the manor house for Christmas dinners or Sunday socials. At these festivities, bosses and employees sat down together to break bread and have a few laughs; employees might even get cash bonuses or gifts and trinkets at this event.
In 20th century America employers began to host office parties—as the name implies—in an office setting, usually in a conference room or meeting hall sizable enough to fit all supervisors and employees. The food is catered, the music is piped in, the wine flows, and the dress is festive, as members of the company gather to enjoy laughter and conversation in honor of a special occasion, like a company anniversary or milestone or a major holiday.
From the 1980s through today, employers may also choose to host an Office Party at a location outside the company, such as a rented recreation facility, a country club, a restaurant, or a night club. Here co-workers stand a better chance of letting their hair down, maybe even dancing, playing party games, or taking a fun turn at the karaoke machine. One just has to be careful how much they drink and just how much fun they have, because (forget about Santa Claus!) the boss is watching!
