Office Party Conversation Ideas

An office conversation is easy for some people while difficult for others. Depending on the work environment, an office party conversation could be fun or intimidating. For those that are not sure of an outcome or have never spoken to people in the workplace before, icebreakers are always a great place to start.

When at an office party, it is important to know what conversations are acceptable and which ones are not. Refer to the company handbook if there are any questions. Remember that a party is more inviting but crossing the line is not. Once these boundaries have been established, the rest is easy!

Conversation starters can be words that are said to a person as well as actions. Most of the time people start off a conversation by saying hello. After the other person says hello, there needs to be a follow up. This could be a “did you know” type of small talk or it could also be an opportunity to offer the person a drink.

Keeping the “next move” in mind is not always the best approach, as conversations should happen naturally and go with the flow. Think of office talk as any other talk that is with friends, in moderation. If a person feels as though they need a backup, fun facts and world records are always a great fallback. Knowing about the latest in media trends is also very helpful as well. This could be social media networks, Facetime, IM, chat or any other computer related communication tool and more.
