In Munich, an Oktoberfest is held annually during a 16 to 18 day party at the end of September and into the beginning of October, and it is celebrated here in the United States as well, so talk of the holiday is easy. In Germany, it is called the world’s largest fair. This celebration is associated with great food and lots of beer consumption.
There is always good conversation in store when it comes to food, and Oktoberfest serves up some of the world’s finest. There are ham hocks, roast pork, chicken, and grilled fish on a stick. Potato or bread dumplings are also famous during Oktoberfest, as well as sausages, called Wurstl. Cheese noodles and sauerkraut are also on the menu during Oktoberfest. This is just a small taste of the foods presented. There is so much more of the foods to talk about.
As far as the beer is concerned, only beer that has been brewed in Munich, and labeled Oktoberfest Beer, can be served in Munich during Oktoberfest. There is actually a club of Munich breweries that prepare beer for just this purpose.
It all started in 1811 with an agricultural festival and horse racing to boost the Bavarian culture. Knowledge of this history would be great for conversation during Oktoberfest. In the coming years, carnival booths appeared, and there were prizes given away, as well. It soon became an annual event, with a parade, and people attending the festivals in full traditional Bavarian costumes. Games, dancing, and music is also very popular during this two week celebration of Bavarian custom.
