History has held the age of 50 to be a turning point in life. If marks the middle of a century and is considered the point where a person’s life begins to slow down, or go downhill. This long held belief has sparked the recent theme of an over the hill party. The guest of honor is portrayed as old and decrepit.
The over the hill concept is historically a fairly accurate fact. Most people do not live to be one hundred years old so reaching the age of fifty is a turning point. The over the hill theme is all in good fun and is meant to honor the birthday boy or girl in a satirical manner. There are tons of party items that feature this theme.
In addition to the black balloons, condolence invitations, and other funeral type items, there are many creative things a host can do. The guest of honor can be seated in a wheelchair with lap robe. A bib is creative addition when serving the food. Before going too far, make sure that the birthday guest of honor is on board. It could hurt their feelings or even make them angry.
If the guest of honor is okay with the concept, then the fun can genuinely get creative. Historically the theme can go with the idea the birthday girl or boy is old, or near death. Monitor ideas for the taste test, they need to stay within the community boundaries for what would be normally acceptable. Being creative can sometimes lead to going over the top instead of just over the hill.
