Passover Costume
The Passover holiday for both Christians and Jews occurs during the biblical month of Nissan which is right before Easter. Even though both groups celebrate the same holiday, both tend to celebrate it for slightly different reasons. For Jewish participants its meant to remember the time when Jews were slaves in Egypt and their eventually release and exodus out of Egypt. For Christians its become a time to reflect on the sacrifices of Jesus Christ and how it freed them from sin. Not many Christens celebrate Passover these days but there are Protestants, Mormons and The United Church of God that practice.
Passover can be a quiet and solemn party or a fun celebration with the family before Easter. Or it can be a little bit of both with a chance for the kids to learn more about the historical meaning behind the event. A costume party is a great way to really get into the history of Passover.
Have the guests come to the party in robes made of woven cloth and red or dark colored capes. They can even modify a roman piece like a Julius Caesar costume to fit the time period. Even the kids can get into the party games with cute lamb or sheep costumes. They are adorable and they'll make good family photo opportunities for the albums.
Costumes can also be a way for you to tell the story of Passover, by having some one dress up in robes or clothing similar to that worn a few thousand years ago. That person can then be the storyteller describing the story of Moses and the Exodus out of Egypt.
After a history lesson though, it's good to let the kids relax and enjoy some good food. Perhaps hold a costume party contest so the kids can pick out the best costumes.
