The history of the series is followed up by standard plots and running gags that often intersect during each show. A subplot almost always includes Perry the Platypus who is an acting secret agent. Perry the Platypus is in a constant and consistent battle with an evil scientist who goes by the name of Dr. Heinz Doofensmirtz. Eventually though, the two plots always eventually intersect and serve to negate all traces of the step brothers adventures just before Candace can show them to their mother.

It is a fact that this series is well known for its musical renditions. These appear in almost every episode since the very first season.
