The Pokémon franchise has left its own mark on history. This originated as a video game that was playable on the game boy system and spread into a worldwide phenomenon in no time. After its release in 1996 it has become the second of the most lucrative gaming based enterprise in the entire world. The only gaming franchise it falls behind is the Mario series of games. Since the video games inception Pokémon products began to explode onto the market.
Pokémon's history includes wide marketing into the areas of trading cards, toys, manga, books, anime and many other forms of media targeting children. A long line of clothing as well as everything from shoes to girls hair ties ensued. Pokémon had some excellent merchandisers who brought their product into its tenth year of service in the year 2006. As it originated a video game it also made its mark there by selling a version of the Pokémon game known as Pikachu well into over two hundred million copies.
The history behind the name of Pokémon actually comes from a brand of Japanese toys called Pocket Monsters. Pocket Monsters were already more than a bit popular in Japan by the time Pokémon was released to the public. Late in 2005 the company 4KidsEntertainment announced their agreement not to renew the Pokémon line with their company. The actual concept of Pokémon actually derives from the hobby of bug collecting. This hobby is a favorite of the executive director of the Pokémon line itself.
