A festive
party can be had with an
educational twist.
Each February, we celebrate President’s Day on the third Monday of the month. Because it’s a federal holiday, many children stay home from school, and many parents get the luxury of a day off. So, to enjoy the time you have together for the day, have a President’s Day party with a little education thrown in to keep things interesting! It’s a great time to talk about our government, voting, election day, what the President does, and why there is a day to honor them. Using play money, show the children all the presidents on the bills, and then ask them to design a new bill in whatever amount they want, with a different president. Tell them about the different presidents on the money and why they were important enough to make it on the bills. Find out what they would do if they got to be president for a day, and why. Teach them about voting, the White House, Mt. Rushmore, and why these things are special. Using clay, you can let your children make their own versions of the White House and/or Mount Rushmore. Print pictures of the presidents and color them. Share some facts about who the President was when you were born, and when each child was born. Dress up as the President, and give a speech to everyone! The most important thing about this educational party is that while the children learn about President’s Day, they engage many senses, and get creative with many kinds of play. Always ask them questions, as you may learn something new, too!
