The word prom was derived from the term promenade, which indicates a formal dance where girls and boys alike turn out in all their finery at school halls that have been decorated to resemble grand dance emporiums. These supervised dances are followed by different variations of the prom party.
At one time the prom party was considered the pinnacle of the evening’s celebration, as this festivity was planned and overseen by students without adult supervision. Whether at a home, hotel or teen spot, the prom party was seen as the culmination of the night’s events, and sometimes was even more anticipated then the prom itself.
Yet because of unfortunate happenings related to prom parties as they happened in the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, (everything from alcohol-related car accidents to drunken fist fights to unplanned pregnancies), many schools—and even some community organizations, like the Rotary Club and some church groups—are arranging adult-supervised after-prom parties. These, like the prom itself, involve music, dancing, food and nonalcoholic drinks.
In the past two decades, anti-prom parties are also all the rage. People who don’t have prom dates, or those who consider the prom to be a classist, establishment-based party with little redeeming value, might convene at a private residence to talk, laugh, and enjoy food, movies, and one another’s company.
While one’s high school prom is a time-honored tradition that forms many a timeless memory,
The prom party is a special tradition all its own. Plan the ultimate prom party today!
