Retirement usually only comes around once in a person’s life; so why not send your friend, family member or co-worker off with some party music that is far from ‘retiring.’ Anyone retiring will be in the mood to sing and dance.

The ultimate retirement party playlist could include:

Golden Years by David Bowie
Through the Years by Kenny Rogers. Many a retiree will shed a tear when hearing this one.
A Couple Days Off by Huey Lewis and the News
9 to 5 by Dolly Parton. The retiree will get a kick out of hearing this one.
She Works Hard for the Money by Donna Summer (for a female guest of honor). Honor the retiree and the late, great Ms. Summer.
Hard Working Man by Brooks and Dunn (for a male guest of honor)
Back on Holiday by Robbie Nevil
Memories by Elvis Presley. This song will evoke a great deal of reflection for guests.
I’ll Remember by Madonna
Old Folks at Home by Stephen Foster
And of course, a retirement party host should not forget to pick up some primo party supplies. These could include wall art photographs of the guest of honor, confetti, tissue banners and streamers in glittery hues of gold, ivory and silver, ‘old coot’ miniatures that could be strewn throughout the party area as gag pieces, plastic canes and paper mache walkers that could be hung from the ceiling for the same purpose, plastic time pieces and ‘retirement watches’ that all guests could take home as party favors, etc. A box can serve a dual purpose by first being able to hold supplies, but also be decorated on the outside for decor use. Don't be hesitant about asking parents to help out at a celebration for children. With a little imagination and white poster board, crayons, coloring pencils, tape, staples and printed photo images that can be cut, kids can create their own paper hats.

A Retirement party is the wonderful time for homemade retirement banners, handmade retirement signs, balloon bouquets and other handmade party supplies. These little decorative tokens can truly make a celebration. Retirement is a special time in most people’s life and the addition of handmade party supplies will make it perfect. From a variety of handmade banners and retirement party streamers to homemade balloon bouquets and handmade party signs the Retirement party is bound to be a hit. Preparing homemade party supplies and organizing a Retirement party can be a lot of fun and very enjoyable. It can in fact be almost as enjoyable as the festivity itself.

Homemade Retirement party supplies add a great deal to a Retirement party. A personalized homemade flag, banner or sign for a retirement party can mean a great deal to the person being honored. The handmade party supplies such as banners, flags and signs can be adorned with photos, personal comments and well wishes for this retirement celebration. They can be highly personal and loving in message and meaning.

A homemade retirement banner can often compare to other homemade party supplies in size and appearance. Typically a homemade retirement banner has a photo of the person retiring and their name along with other important information. Once the retirement banner is completed, find a great location to hang it and enjoy the retirement party with your homemade party supplies and party goods. This is a gathering all in attendance will remember.

A retirement party honors a significant milestone in the life of any human being; and a celebration like this deserves nothing short of a retirement party cake. Honor the hardworking retiree with a handsome party pastry.

For the host who is planning a retirement party for a friend or relative, a retirement party cake should be a relative no brainer. He/she could prepare a white buttercream cake emblazoned with the words “Good Luck (fill in name of retiree here)” sketched out in icing of red, blue or gold. Even this simple message can glow with the right icing. He/she could design a cake that reflects the favorite colors of the host, or that even bears a transposed photo of the person. The guest of honor will be--well--honored by this gesture.

If the host is planning a retirement party for a co-worker, employer, employee, or the friend of the spouse, she may find it more challenging to come up with a cake that is warm, personal and of course delicious. In that case, she might come up with a cake that bears a general retirement theme. With some mint icing and a little imagination, a simple sheet cake could be transformed into a sprawling golf course; or, with the addition of party supplies like small plastic canes and rocking chairs, she could make a cake that bears playful reminders that retirement ain’t for sissies. Guests will appreciate the creativity of either cake design.

Members of the red hat club get to be great friends over the years they spend getting to know each other and it's no small thing for those members to want to throw a retirement party for a friend who will soon be leaving the workforce. Besides parties are great fun to attend and even more fun to plan and decorate. It won't be any work at all when all the gals of the club get together to help with the party too.

Since you are members of the red hat club go ahead and rely on that theme for the retirement party. Use lots and lots of red and some purple. There are plenty of red hat themed party supplies available for use at the party. Look for plenty of plates, dessert plates, napkins, and tablecloths and they will not only serve a party purpose but make for very easy clean up. Streamers are another easy way to add to the party atmosphere. And if your retiree is sixty years old when retiring look for some great red metallic dangles shaped in the number sixty to hang from the ceiling. These really add to the effect and they work well to catch the light in the room and reflect it back on the party guests. Lastly don't forget your party banner. Customize a retirement or work banner and hang it on the wall for everyone to see.

Food for the event doesn't have to be expensive. Brew some tea and make up a couple batches of cookies. Have the guests each bring something small for a potluck, which will make it easier for you and provide a variety of tastes for the guests to consider. They can also take home their own dirty dishes for clean up after the party.

Retirement History, Facts and Educational Resources

Add an educational twist to any birthday party, holiday celebration, or theme party.  Share the history of the Retirement theme to the guests.  Play some free printable educational party games.  Shhh don't tell the kids that they are learning!

One’s retirement is, in itself, a milestone of personal history; a cap on the impressive work record of an individual who is about to launch a new phase in their lives. Similarly, the Retirement Party has a rich history all its own. This is a classic and time-honored festivity to be sure.

Traditionally, retirement parties were sedate occasions distinguished by a quiet dinner and tender recollections involving the retiree. It was a time to remember, reflect, and pay tribute.

At many of today’s retirement festivities, all notions of “sedate” and “tender” go right out the window. Forget about that stuff in more modern times! Today’s retirees are sometimes “heralded” at humorous roasts, where friends, family members and co-workers tell funny and sometimes embarrassing stories about them. Or they could be honored at a mock funeral, complete with a coffin cake and black dress for everyone involved, to signify their transition from work life into retirement. Just make sure the guest of honor has a good sense of humor. Female retirees might be treated to a Red Hat-style festivity, while males might go fishing with friends.

Retirees might be treated to a serenade from a professional singer, just as Bette Midler serenaded Johnny Carson on his last episode of The Tonight Show. OK, hiring Bette might get a bit pricy so opt for a soundalike!

Gifts at retirement parties also run the gamut these days; whereas clocks and gold watches were once the order of the day, today’s retirees could receive funny figurines depicting ‘old codger’ types on motorcycles or golf carts, or T-shirts that may read “Make Way for the Raunchy Retiree” or “Sun City Here I Come!” Of course, they’d probably be happier with tickets to cruises and theatrical productions; other frequent gifts at today’s retirement parties. The sky is the limit when it comes to modern gifts.

Retirement is an experience that only comes along once in a lifetime. Honor a special retiree today with the ultimate Retirement Party! . Gather up some leftover brown packing boxes, wrap them in a matching theme color design and place them throughout the event space for instant decorations. Everyone does not drink alcohol, be inclusive when planning a get-together and have a choice of drinks that include non-alcoholic opinions. Gather up some leftover brown packing boxes, wrap them in a matching theme color design and place them throughout the event space for instant decorations. The history of Retirement has different interpretations by each person, so use your own judgement. Share these facts with friends at a celebration.
