One’s retirement is, in itself, a milestone of personal history; a cap on the impressive work record of an individual who is about to launch a new phase in their lives. Similarly, the Retirement Party has a rich history all its own.
Traditionally, retirement parties were sedate occasions distinguished by a quiet dinner and tender recollections involving the retiree.
At many of today’s retirement festivities, all notions of “sedate” and “tender” go right out the window. Today’s retirees are sometimes “heralded” at humorous roasts, where friends, family members and co-workers tell funny and sometimes embarrassing stories about them. Or they could be honored at a mock funeral, complete with a coffin cake and black dress for everyone involved, to signify their transition from work life into retirement. Retirees might be treated to a serenade from a professional singer, just as Bette Midler serenaded Johnny Carson on his last episode of The Tonight Show.
Gifts at retirement parties also run the gamut these days; whereas clocks and gold watches were once the order of the day, today’s retirees could receive funny figurines depicting ‘old codger’ types on motorcycles or golf carts, or T-shirts that may read “Make Way for the Raunchy Retiree” or “Sun City Here I Come!” Of course, they’d probably be happier with tickets to cruises and theatrical productions; other frequent gifts at today’s retirement parties.
