This 2001 comedy animation was full of a long list of stars who had previously made history using their famous voices in other cartoons. Eddie Murphy, Mike Meyers, John Lithgow and other famous names. This feature film made its original appearance in a 1990 picture book called Shrek! This film which was produced by DreamWorks Animation films was actually the first to win the Academy Award for the Best Animated Feature in 2001.
Mike Meyers takes over a role that added nicely to his acting history when he played the lovable and gruff ogre named Shrek. Additionally, Shrek's love interest is played by Cameron Diaz who voices the lovely Princess Fiona. He is also unwillingly accompanied by his loyal friend Donkey who is played by the famous comedian Eddie Murphy. Although his presence isn't required for comic relief on this already hilarious film his wit and character has become a favored character from this series.
Originally released in 2001 the history of this success story continues to grow. This film alone helped to establish DreamWorks as a prime candidate for competition with Pixar who is a leader in the animated film industry. The film's success was laid in concrete when fans clamored for sequels to the originals. With the fourth Shrek just behind them in 2010 there seems to be no end to the love fans have for all of these lovably, if strange, characters. The film has gained a bit of attention as well for their choices in soundtrack musicians. Choosing the funky sounds of Smash Mouth and the Eels has given this film a great appeal to the younger crowds.
