The Slumber Party is perhaps the most inaccurately named of all festivities. After all, the last thing that guests generally do at a slumber party is sleep.
The origin of the slumber party might be traced to ancient civilization, when tribes of people often lived and travelled together. As these people both slept and celebrated in one place, it can be said they hosted their own—very long—version of the Slumber Party! No word on the discovery of cave etchings that depicted pillow fighting and mass consumption of sausage pizza.:)
In modern times, the Slumber Party has become a rite of passage for teen and preteen girls. Generally a single host invites friends from school to share an overnight party at her home. The group enjoys sumptuous snack foods like pizza, candy, soda and cookies, watches fun party movies on DVD, listens to music, gossips and swaps stories, and calls friends on the phone. The girls might also enjoy time-honored Slumber Party rituals like pillow fights and joke telling.
Boys sometimes also have sleepovers with friends, but they’re rarely referred to as slumber parties. And these days, adult slumber parties are all the rage; the guys might stage a sleepover Super Bowl party, while the ladies might have a Slumber Party bridal shower. At either movie night party, the first guest to fall asleep might still end up with a face full of whipped cream!
Whether a movie night party host is young or simply young at heart, she can’t go wrong with a movie night Slumber Party. Plan the ultimate Slumber Party today!
