Thomas the Tank Engine began as a series that has created its own different type of history. This steam locomotive character was originally created as a series of books by Reverend W. Awdry with help from his son Christopher. Thomas himself became the most popular character in the entire series as well as the television series known as Thomas and Friends. Thomas arrives as a train tank engine who sports a blue coat of paint with all of the required red lining and his running number is the number 1.
Thomas the Tank Engine actually has quite a long history considering his first appearance was in a set of books created in 1946 and his actual design comes from the E2 Class of tank engines from Lawson Billinton in 1919.
His history becomes even richer when you understand that when writer Britt Allcroft came across his original books she decided to mortgage her house and sink her entire savings into the stories of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends and bringing them fully back to life. This program gained award winning status and even evntually spawned its own large line of merchandising including extra media such as movies, videos and many more books and series. So although Allcroft took over the franchise in 1979 it didn't reach much popularity until shortly after the year 1996. Awdry does not regret that his wife encouraged him to publish his stories in the first place and achieved great literary status for his contributions to Thomas and Friends.
