The golden-haired god of Norse mythology, Thor is a legendary figure that has known many incarnations throughout history.
The hammer-wielding god of thunder, Thor is widely acknowledged in mythological history books as the son of the great god Odin. And while some legends portray him as red haired with a beard, he is for the most part portrayed as a muscled, statuesque blond man with a clean-shaven, if mighty and somber, expression.
Throughout cultural history Thor has provided the inspiration for a number of artistic creations, including the painting Thor in Hymirs Boot bekämpft die Midgardschlange by Henry Fuseli. At the other end of the spectrum, actor and rock singer Jon Mikl Thor—an appropriately tall, blond, muscular singer with a booming voice—adapted the moniker of the Norse legend as part of his stage name.
Among other little known trivia facts is that the comic artist geniuses Stan Lee and Jack Kirby also sought inspiration from the legend of Thor, and created the premiere Thor comic strip in the early 1960s. He has appeared as a main character in Marvel, DC and Comico Comics.
From that point in history, Thor has become an American symbol of truth, justice and fairness. His legend has spawned comics, cartoons, toys and action figures, as well as a sense of wonder and unyielding spirit in comic book fans of all ages.
Now the mighty thunder god is set to appear in his first live action motion picture in history. “Thor” will star handsome leading man Chris Hemsworth in the title role, along with Oscar winner Natalie Portman.
Thor has come a long way through the years; and he never lost his thunder.
