February 14th each year is St. Valentine’s Day. It is generally regarded as a day for couples, second only to their anniversaries for love and romance. Many singles hate the holiday, or use it to try to find love. At any rate, you can work a holiday educational party in the children, to help them learn a little history, about the world, and about your family. If your children are young enough to be required to send valentines to class, you can use this as a party activity…if they are younger, let them make valentines for the family members. It is the perfect time to tell them the origins behind Valentine’s Day, though there are a few different stories. All this love talk may get them curious about how Mom and Dad fell in love, so you can tell them your own story about love, romance, and how wonderful it is. If you have boys, forget that idea and let them tell you about the girls they are crushing on. Each parent can take their children on a gift search for the other, for a nice surprise. Have them help make a special Valentine ’s Day meal full of pink and red foods, with lots of hearts. There are several options here, from red velvet cake, to strawberries with whipped cream. Another thing you can do with your kids include making handmade gifts for the people they love—necklaces, friendship bracelets, photo frames, etc. Use conversation hearts to write a story, gluing the hearts to the paper in place of where the words would be. Share each other’s stories, and laugh!
