The honoring of military veterans is celebrated throughout the United States on November 11th, and many Americans know or have known of a veteran who has served our country. It is a day of remembrance of them, as well as respect for them. Veterans have dedicated their lives to this country, and they should be commended for this. Many have lost their lives in wars for this country, and it is the reason that we are still free.
Woodrow Wilson first named the day Armistice Day, in 1919. And it originally honored veterans of World War I. In 1954 Dwight Eisenhower signed it into law that Veterans Day would honor all veterans of all wars.
Veterans Day is a federal holiday, so banks are closed and no mail is delivered. Many people are off from work, and schools are also closed. Talk should probably come from the mouths of the veterans on this day. They have many stories to tell. Some stories will be sad, others happy, but most will be touching in one way or another. Ask a veteran about his days when he served our country. They were younger, bolder, and had many adventures, whether they were at war or not. When at war, they probably lost some friends along the way. When they served and there was no war, they usually traveled around the world, were stationed in other countries for a while, and were given the chance to see other lands and cultures at a very early age. When you ask them about their times served, you will find that they usually have fascinating stories to tell.
